After completing her nighttime ablutions, and now wearing a fetching cucumber-and-lavender-scented face mask, Ruth sat up in bed, with her trusty Mrs Beeton’s Book of Household Management open on her lap; a delightful tome over a hundred years old, packed full of recipes and advice on running a home to its maximum potential.

The latest recipe was Sardine Pasties.

Ruth screwed up her face.

Mrs Beeton had once again taken her exuberant love for cooking a little too far.

Ruth couldn’t help but read on.

The recipe required a tin of sardines, puff pastry trimmings, and an egg.

Inspired.

The method involved not only skinning the sardines, and removing the backbones, but also placing the halves back together again, as though nothing had been done to the poor fellows. Ruth assumed the heads and tails were optional. Then one simply, and lovingly, wrapped each sardine in pastry, brushed with beaten egg, and threw them into the oven for fifteen minutes.

Ruth scanned the suggestion of only serving one per person. “Is that all?” She closed the book. “Well, I certainly won’t be trying that, Mrs Beeton.” She set the hefty tome on the nightstand and lay down. “However, I wonder if Margaret would exchange that recipe for her steak and ale pie.” Ruth yawned, “Worth a shot,” and approximately two seconds later, she was dreaming of Captain Barney’s happy sheep jumping over a fence, and the one lucky tup chasing after them.
